Last Saturday, David J of Novi Split and his new crew, The San Pedro Sound Machine – A Yacht Rock Cover Bank, had their debut performance at a Yacht Rock Party in San Pedro, CA. Here are some highlights of the evening.

Mixed Tapes are Cool Again

Remember those mix tapes your buddies use to make you? Ok, maybe if you are under 25 years old you probably haven’t even seen a cassette in real life. But take my word for it, it was cool at one point in time.

Muxtape is bringing back some retro-chic to the online music sharing community. It allows you to make a MP3 online ‘muxtape’ up to 12 songs at 10 MBytes each. The design and execution is dead simple but some how very appealing. It looks like someone made it in their bedroom when they were grounded by their parents. Its design is also clearly Apple inspired with its iphone-esque interface but i suspect it does not work on an iphone since the music is played via a Flash media player embedded on the site.

Assuming you’ve got nothing against Gibson guitars, then this is the only axe you will need on your next world tour. The Gibson Robot Guitar. Its tuning pegs are motorized and automatically tunes itself using a selectable, but seems uncustomizable, knob. Now I officially have no more excuses not to start my Mamas & Pappas tribute band.

Amazon.com released their editor’s picks of the best albums and best songs of 2007. I was delightfully surprised that New Moon by Elliott Smith is number 8 on the album list and High times ranked 36th on the songs list.

iJigg is Digg for music lovers

I am usually suspect of anyone who decides to clone digg.com with ‘their own spin’ but this one is actually pretty cool. It has a very nicely designed player that you can embed anywhere and nice social features albeit trendy and overrated.

Here is their embedded top song player which is a cool feature to discover new music. You can register, login and Jigg all directly within this embeddable player which will help them grow their userbase virally.

Although their embed link feature from the player currently is broken so I had to browse the page source to find this code. That could be a problem but should be an easy fix for them.
