Quick review of Driftr.com

Driftr.com is a new traveler centric social networking site. I just got my invite last night and gave it a quick spin around the block.

The alpha release has a nice and polished Web 2.0 design with plenty of AJAX. As it is still a alpha release, many of the features are still not enabled. The site lets you log the time, place and details of the trips you have taken and organizes them via a visual map display or chronological drop down list. You can upload photos directly to driftr.com or link your flickr photos to their site via the flickr API.

Driftr allows you to enter places you stayed as well as places you ate at which I guess will eventually allow them to build a database of user reviews to compete with Yelp.com.

The current implementation is very basic but it has promise assuming more useful features are added. A few that come to mind are trip planning and peer recommendations. I’ve got a few more invites so let me know if you want to try it out.

What the hell is a catch-pa?

Anyone listened to the latest TWIT? I know, I know, who the hell listens to this circle jerk podcast anymore… I was desperate! OK?! It was at least comical when Web 2.0 douchbag Jason Calacanis called those trippy distorted letters on registration pages ‘CATCH-PA’s. Skip to 8:24 to hear the Sequoia Capital golden boy create podcasting history.

BTW, the guys at the online backup startup Mozy can’t be too thrill neither when the Bulldog referred to them as ‘Moxy’. (Skip to 45:30).

12 volt socket splitter pr0n

I always have tons of crap in my car and many of my crap need 12 volt power to keep it useful. Even though I have 3 outlets in my truck, I could use more. After looking around for some options I came across this one on Amazon.

Well. I just wanted to tell you that I am NOT going to get this one.

Driving the speed limit for a day

Every once in awhile I get one of those Emails proposing some kind of gasoline boycott day when we are suppose to stay away from the pump. I guess its well and good and god knows how well these propositions do against the rising oil prices. All it seems to do is for the gas stations to offset the sales of gasoline to the days prior and after. If not enough people participate in this campaign, the financial impact is likely undetectable by the oil companies.

I was just thinking the other day while driving on the freeway. If we could get a small percentage of the drivers to just follow the speed limit for a day, it would probably make a much bigger impact. Imagine 1 of every 20 cars on the freeway driving 55 mph. It would probably slow the entire flow of traffic down to a much more fuel efficient speed and create a noticeable drop in gas consumption. This effect wouldn’t just cause people to shift their gas purchases to another day but actually decrease the demand for the days surrounding it. As long as the assholes on the streets can manage their road rage for a day then we might have something worth thinking about…
