Hulu, what the F are you thinking?

I watched a 43 minute episode of Ghost Hunters on Hulu the other day. It was a great show and the video quality was decent but the commercials are a million times worst than regular television. It starts out with a sponsorship drop saying that the show was brought with ‘limited interruptions’ by the advertiser. The truth is, the interruptions are unbearable. They are 5 minute long commercials that you can’t skip. That can be fine if the commercials are engaging and have a good variety of content but that is definitely not the case.

Throughout the 43 minute show, the same 5 minute commercial played 5 times. That’s 25 minutes worth of commercials with 43 minutes of content where usually only 17 minutes would play on regular TV. The fact that you had to sit through the same 5 minutes 5 times is enough to make you want to pull that ethernet plug out of your computer. On top of that, they cut into the shows at random moments. If this is how they are going to deliver their content online, it is going to discourage a lot of viewers.

It is possible that the networks don’t really want hulu to be as successful as it promises to be due to the lucrative contract they have with satellite and cable providers. But that’s just not the way to launch a product that has so much promise just to be sabotaged by its creator.

Who? Me? A hacker?

A few days ago I posted a story about Hulu and how you can embed their videos in your own blog.

I also noticed one little thing that there were more videos available if you just change the numeric id in the embed code. That led me to create a page on Premity.com, a company I started with a couple of other dudes.

A couple of people noticed the page and we even got a call from Nat Worden of TheStreet.com inquiring about our (un)association with the video startup currently it private beta. Little did we know the phone call was an interview for a post on TheStreet.com and made us out to be hackers trying to use their service to garner free publicity.

In reality, this ‘hack’ is not much of a hack at all. Since Hulu allows embedding of their videos outside of their site, even beta testers need to be able to copy and paste the embed code to their destination of choice. That meant anyone who wanted to embed the code onto their blog was free to do so. It just so happens that the video IDs are in ascending numerical order so I just made a page that randomly picks a number out of all of their currently available videos and displays the next 4.

It really is a pretty simple implementation of what Hulu intended for their beta users to be able to do so I would not really consider this a compromise at all of their beta service.

But it is a free world, so say what you will…

You think you are good at Guitar Hero?

I’d just give up now and smash your PS2 while you are at it.

A real episode of Mahalo Daily

Finally, the dunces over at Mahalo decided to put out a real episode of their much hyped daily show, Mahalo Daily featuring Veronica Belmont. The show feels like a rejected news segment from KRON. Short, low production value and thin on content. To top it all of, Jason Calacanis tried his hand once again at humor by crediting himself as craft services in the end props. Pleeeeez! If you want people to watch this show, your best chance will be the keep yourself as far away as possible…

What I want to know is why aren’t these people hosting the daily show at Mahalo?

http://mahalo.blip.tv/

Isn’t the show suppose to be about DIY tips? Nicole and Sarah from this Mahalo show unfortunately weren’t lucky enough to be dating their boss’ second favorite employee (Ryan Block) from his last company to be hosts of the ‘Official’ Mahalo video blog. Dont let that get you down ladies. Keep up the good work and fry on!
